Ministry Insight
Since February 2015, SBMA has established promising relationships —
we outreach and collaborate with other non-profits, churches, youth organizations, and faith-based organizations in the community, with the goal of building healthy communities . We offer training programs intentionally focusing on underserved youth in areas of discontentment and mistrust. Our focus has also included providing services, such as mental health services, legal assistance, housing, employment opportunities, prison re-entry, tutoring, mentoring, and financial literacy for youth and adults suffering from homelessness and poverty conditions and offering opportunities for socially undesirable such as post prison, and ex-gang affiliation. We continue to highlight the importance of mentoring, academic support, leadership development, capacity building, conflict resolution, and community-based public safety partnership.
In addition, SBMA's President and core members, promoted healthier lifestyles through implementation of the State of California's Champions for Change Program (grant), formerly called
"5 A Day." Through this program, we developed community gardens, conducted nutrition classes, and taught physical activities in churches. We also provided nutrition education at health fairs/workshops, developed a cultural, African dance that taught the importance of physical activity and eating more fruits and vegetables, and conducted pre and post surveys to ensure evidence-based effectiveness in making healthy choices more accessible, especially in low-income communities.

The Youth
Youth are important to us— They are the future! Our programs are designed with input from the youth to ensure that we are connecting with them and addressing their concerns/needs. We listen to them with an open, non-judgmental mind, and involve them in our planning to hold their interest in the various activities we conduct/oversee.
Some of the tools/ activities we use to keep youth engaged include, but is not limited to, peer-to-peer counseling, cultural and art activities, spoken "Word," poetry readings, workshops, support groups, assessments, informational sessions, and talk "rap" sessions.
